Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a safe, effective way of supporting the immune system as it works to heal and recover. Those planning to book an appointment at Beacon Dermatology for facial rejuvenation or hair restoration will find this guide on the preparation and aftercare for PRP treatments to offer specific steps to help you get the most out of your treatment. We want you to know exactly how to prepare for PRP hair treatment and the PRP aftercare you need so you get the best possible results!

    Our Experience with PRP Treatments

Beacon Dermatology utilizes the most advanced PRP treatment options for hair restoration and facial rejuvenation. Our board-certified cosmetic and medical dermatologists have over 20 years of experience providing exceptional care to our clients. We use only the most state-of-the-art PRP treatments and rely on our advanced training to ensure the best possible results. Our five certified dermatologists have extreme knowledge of the body, PRP itself, and how to support our clients’ best results.

    What Are PRP Treatments?

PRP treatments are a very effective and safe method to encourage your body to rejuvenate in any targeted area. These injections are placed where we want to target hair growth or improve follicle healing.

During treatment, your blood is put into a centrifuge, which works to separate out the plasma component. This highly rich portion of your blood has growth factors that support cell growth in the target area. PRP injections are highly safe because they use your own blood. There are no chemicals used, and most people do not have any negative reactions. Instead, new cell growth and healing take place, improving your skin health, reducing wrinkles, and supporting hair growth.

    Preparing for PRP Treatments

Meet with one of our board-certified dermatologists in our office for a full consultation. We’ll go over exactly what you can expect based on your specific needs and the goals you have. Even if you’re not too sure that this is the right treatment for your needs, we encourage you to come in for a consultation.

    Pre-Treatment Consultation

Book an appointment with us for PRP treatment or a consultation as the first step. During this meeting, which will last about 20 to 30 minutes, you’ll have an exam of the target area, talk about your health and the symptoms you have, and then learn if we believe PRP will help you.

We are always upfront about what you can expect throughout this process, including the level of improvement you’ll see. Ask us every question you have.

    Preparing Your Skin

Always follow the instructions our dermatologist provides you with after your consultation. Most of the time, we’ll have a step-by-step process to help you. Here are some important steps:

    • Continue your current skincare routine or any recommendations we offer.
    • We will discuss any type of prescription medication you are taking and when you should stop doing so, if allowable.
    • If you are using any type of systemic steroids, those will need to stop between 1 and 2 weeks prior. For those using blood-thinning herbs or supplements, those need to stop 1 week prior. If you are taking any anti-inflammatory medications, stop taking them 5 days prior.
    • In the week leading up to the procedure, stay hydrated. Drink water, without sugar or caffeine, as much as possible.
    • Maintain a healthy diet that’s balanced with vitamins and minerals. It’s a good idea to limit sugar to help reduce inflammation risk.

If you have any medical conditions, be sure to let us know ahead of time. This allows us to create a care plan for managing medications you may be using.

    Understanding the PRP Treatment Process

The PRP treatment process is fast, non-painful, and starts working right away. You will have slightly different experiences based on your procedure type.

    PRP Facial

For facial PRP treatments, we will extract the necessary blood from you through an IV. We then will place it into a centrifuge to separate it before reinjecting it into the treatment area of your face and neck.

    PRP for Hair Loss

For hair loss treatment, PRP injections will occur in the areas being targeted. You can expect to feel tiny pinpricks on your skin as we provide the injection.

    Aftercare Instructions for PRP Treatments

There is no necessary downtime for PRP treatments. This means you can go back to work right away or get back to your day. You can expect to feel a bit sore in some areas, but you shouldn’t have any significant immediate aftereffects.

    Immediate Aftercare Steps

Right after your procedure, we’ll ask you about any discomfort you have and offer recommendations for any pain that develops. You may have some slight swelling at the injection points. Keep yourself hydrated. Talk to us about any medications you are taking before you restart them.

    • Do not touch, rub, or massage the treatment area.
    • Avoid bathing or showering for at least 8 hours.
    • Avoid applying heat or ice to the area – do not do this for at least 3 days.
    • Avoid any topical products on the skin for at least 6 hours.

    Long-Term Aftercare Tips

In the days after your treatment, you’ll see improvement in the area, including less reddening and overall improvement of the tenderness, if any. Keep the following in mind:

    • Avoid taking any medications or nutritional supplements until you talk to our team.
    • Avoid applying heat or ice to the area.
    • Try not to consume alcohol or tobacco products for at least 3 days, as they can hinder improvement and healing.
    • Stay hydrated.

What to Expect During and After PRP Treatments

    Sensations During the Procedures

During your procedure, be sure to ask us about anything we are doing. We’re happy to explain what is happening to you.

    • You may hear the spinning of the centrifuge to help concentrate your blood.
    • You will feel needle pricks when we inject the PRP.
    • If you feel weak or lightheaded in any way, let us know immediately.

Common Side Effects and Their Duration

Many people will have no significant side effects (we’re using your blood and nothing else to support your healing process). However, some possible side effects can occur:

    • Soreness and tenderness in the injection site area may linger for a few days
    • Bruising at the injection site area may remain for several days
    • Infections are possible if any bacteria get into these tiny areas, but proper treatment eliminates this risk.
    • Minor bleeding may occur in the first 6 to 8 hours.
    • Pain may linger for several days for some.

    Timeline for Visible Results

You’ll notice a difference in your skin immediately after treatment, including a slight plumping. However, that’s just the reaction to the treatment. The results will take between 2 and 3 weeks to become clear. You will likely see a brighter complexion and a glow to the skin.

Hair growth can take longer, up to several weeks. Additional treatments are typically needed.

The healing process can differ from one person to the next. However, if you follow our tips on what to avoid after PRP hair treatment and skin care and you invest in keeping your body healthy, you could see results sooner.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink before PRP treatment?

Our team at Beacon Dermatology will provide you with specific instructions based on what you need and your treatment heading into PRP. Typically, there is no anesthesia with this procedure, so you can drink water before your treatment. We highly encourage you to avoid caffeine and alcohol products leading up to the procedure.

Can you exercise after PRP injections?

Give your body some time to recover. If you are feeling good, you can exercise the next day. Protect the injection sites from any type of bacteria, chemicals, and lotions for as long as possible. Do not strain the areas.

What should I avoid after a PRP treatment?

There are a few things to avoid after PRP hair treatment. You do not want to rub the area or wash your hair on the day of the procedure. You also want to avoid anything that could limit healing, such as smoking or drinking alcohol. We also encourage you to avoid the use of chemical treatments, styling products, heat-based applications, or any type of procedure that could cause significant pressure on this area.
